Aim, Fire, Measure, Adjust!

Goal setting occurs from the organizational level down to the individual level. Managing by Objectives (MBO) gets everyone pulling in the same direction.

"Having struggled with goal-setting, all my Partners and I realize the futility of trying to do it ourselves, especially with the 11 individual, strong personalities. You did an excellent job for us."
-- Edwin B. Bruce, A.I.A., Managing Partner

At the organizational level, we use a copyrighted Annual Goal Setting & Review process that is a critical element for successful ongoing business operations. Sometimes called Strategic Goal Setting or Key Business Goals Creation, its purpose is to tap the brain trust of the enterprise and get everyone on the same page through consultative management; the most successful form of leadership for over ten years in The United States.

In addition to facilitating consensus management, the Annual Goal Setting and Review process also has two other applications. First, it is a very effective way to quickly "jump start" an organization or department when "time is of the essence". Second, it is a very effective way of methodically measuring progress achieved on prior years goals for enhanced accountability before setting a new round of goals. This "measure, adjust, aim, fire" approach steadily and methodically ensures that the organization achieves more of its goals more often. According to Fallon and Brinkerhoff (1996), organizational effectiveness is a company's long-term ability to consistently achieve its strategic and operational goals.

The Annual Goal Setting process used by Alliance Professional Group, LLC is unique in two ways. First, it sets the reward and consequence boundaries for each goal. Secondly, it identifies all obstacles to goal achievement BEFORE focusing on solutions. This technique makes it more likely that surprises and unattained goals will be avoided due to "unanticipated" factors.

Not only organizations, but individuals stand to benefit from setting specific goals. More at the individual level, Management By Objectives (MBO) enables the organization to get everyone "pulling in the same direction" and aligned with the organizational goals. These goals must be SMART, meaning they are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and on a Timetable. The goals must be set mutually by all those involved so that they are not imposed. Otherwise, it is an improper application of modern MBO and will be resisted by the employees it is designed to guide.

Management By Objectives (MBO) is a three step process as follows:

Develop an Action Plan - Managers and subordinates work together to set goals that are specific and measurable. They develop a plan to attain them.

Implementation - Progress toward the goal is carefully monitored, making corrections as needed.

Evaluation - Determine if the goal was reached. If "yes", set new goals. If "no" develop/revise a new plan.

Because the ultimate assessment of the extent to which goals are met helps determine the selection of new goals, MBO is a continuous process.
